Science in Medicine School Prize

Apr 16, 2025, 10:18 AM by Sophie Peet

The Science in Medicine School Teams Prize 2025 is a competition for sixth form students in science in medicine. The CRUK Convergence Science Centre is supporting one of the contests, asking students to develop an idea using science or technology to make the patient experience of cancer treatment more supportive or comforting. Students will have the opportunity to explore the science behind current cancer treatments and use their creativity to come up with novel ideas in true convergence style!

Imperial College London have launched the fifth annual Science in Medicine School Teams Prize which aims to engage sixth form students with science in medicine. The CRUK Convergence Science Centre is supporting one of the five prizes available.

Many people have a loved one who has been affected by cancer so it is well known that cancer treatment is a challenging journey, often long and painful for patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery. While the treatment itself cannot be altered, innovative solutions can help make the experience more supportive and comforting for patients. We’ve asked students to develop an idea based on science/technology that enhances the patient journey by offering guidance, distraction, or emotional support during treatment. The possibilities are endless - we welcome all types of innovations, such as medical devices, apps, games, or content materials (written, audio, animated, etc.) that help patients cope with their treatment experience.

It is important to recognise the breadth and variety of research in cancer, from finding potential cures or improving current treatments to patient centric research that focusses on improving the patient experience. We hope that this project will help students understand the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for effective developments and improvements in research relating to cancer.

Any educational organisation in the UK with sixth form students may participate. Schools have until 30th June 2025 to submit entries.

Prizes are intended for supporting science-related activities in the winning schools:

First Prize - £3000

Second Prize - £2000

Third Prize - £1000
